Hurricane Katrina: she came through, got what she wanted, and left everyone there with shambles and disease. She was a whoreicane.
Today, I got up early so I could volunteer to help. I'm in Houston! So I figure, hey, this is great. I'm where I need to be. I can volunteer at the Houston Food Bank or even at the Astrodome. I got up this morning, ready and excited to help out and volunteer, only to find online that both of the volunteer quotas had been filled and were not looking for any more volunteers.
Immediately following, I went online to look for more. Though there are a lot of opportunities to help, you must be trained for a lot of them. I fly out Tuesday, September 6th, the day after Labor Day, and most trainings (for whatever reason) are on Wednesday, September 7th. So it looks like I can't help after all!
What I Learned: There are a LOT of people with a LOT of heart and a LOT of time. God bless them. I'm glad to hear that! But more importantly, many people volunteer now and the amounts dwindle later. New Orleans will be out of commission for quite a while, so it would behoove them and the cause to volunteer my time and energy at a later date, when there is a decline in people volunteering.
